they sound right in any box with the proper or close to the proper dimensions. the 5500 is designed to be in a box with i think like 7.5 to 9" of airspace from the magnet to the back wall, so for them to be in an eclosure of like 2.5' or more is insane. ull have no pressure. the speaker will just move, and make a floomp floomp sound, with no bass, eventually ull burn the voice coils.

That doesnt make since. How can you have subs that dont need a box. Maybe im not sure what open air subs are but subs work by compressing air and sound. It wont punch if it cant compress air. Peroid. Thats why i sub not in the right box sucks. How can you have a sub just out in the open? It cant compress air so it wont punch.

RE: rear seat delete W/cutout
I just finished taking the back seats out and making a box for my subs (see pics below.) I built a fiberglass box for the subs to sit in and they sound great. They are just as loud and powerful as they were in a sealed enclosure in the trunk! I have 2 JL 10's and these require more air space than most other brands. There was plenty of space to put the subs where the seats were and get a powerful sound. I could not do it in the back of the stang like that pic you showed because I have a convertable and the motor for the top would get in the way. I would suggest building your own custom enclosure if you are into that sort of thing or have one built. I love how mine turned out and I think I am going to get it airbrushed to complete the look.
