mileage has to match the car. if the car says it has 35000 miles but the the clearcoat is peeling off or the leather is cracked or fadded. its pretty esay to tell.

Ya i thought about leaving it until i sell it, to save miles on the odomoeter. But i'd rather fix it...however i don't have the money right nowso it will have to stay that way for a while.

As for my car matching the mileage.....My car doesn't match now, its has 134,000 and looks and acts like it barely has 50,000 maybe!
This car is in amazing condition, perfect paint, great leather, mechanically sound, this is the first real problem, and its now really affecting the car

As for you guys thinking it is the speedo gear, how could that be if the speedometer is still working

From what I understand the mileage function is stored in the vehicle PCM (powertrain control module). This information originates in the VSS or vehicle speed sensor, the engine needs this information as an input for fuel trim/egr/timing outputs. Take a search online for your mustang and find out where the VSS is located. It is also possible that there is a code stored in the PCM, have someone scan your vehicle.

So is the mileage odometer in my car, controlled digitally/electronically, or is it controlled by a cable?

It is a digital signal, that is burned in your PCM, the VSS is electronic. For instance even if your ODO does not display, that infois still stored in the PCM, if the sensor is transmitting info.

I would diagnose the VSS, before I started getting into the computer, it is possible there are codes stored in your PCM to send you in the right direction.
