RE: knockin'
I would say it normal in high mileage fords i have had to fords do that
my mustang now has 111K on it and in the morning i idle down the street in first for about 3/4 of a mile till the knocking goes away... just waiting for the oil to circulate.
i had a probe did exact same thing and i put 40k miles on it doing that.

if it was the oil not circulating very well wouldnt u get valve tick too? idk, i know this guy that just bought a bullitt and took it to get its oil chnaged and they put a heavier weight in it and his engine started knocking or he got valve tick or something like that, i cant remember for sure, ethier way it had to suck to be him. The guys at the oil shop always ask me if i want to put 5w 30 in it and i always make sure the put the 5w 20 since that happened to him

RE: knockin'
ORIGINAL: JT2000Ok, so sometimes when my engine is cold it will knock. It only does it once and it runs just fine when it warms up. So what's the deal?
PS: It would be a good idea to let the motor warm up idling.

Could be many things. How many miles do you have? What oil/weight do you use? Does it still rev to redline when it's warm without any problems? I run MOBIL 1 10W-30 with no problems. Mark

RE: knockin'
Some people experience piston slap until the engine is warm, while piston slap usually isn't catastrophic, taking it for a spin down the road while it's making the noise won't be doing anything positive for your engine.
My advise is to let the car slap away in your driveway until it's warm and isn't doing it anymore. I forget exactly when the 4.6 was switched to the Romeo plants, but I know the Windsor plants struggled immensley with piston slap.
