I think that I tried 11/32 or 5/16. One or the other. If you want to be safe, go to small. You can always make the hole larger if the idle seems to suffer a bit. Note that in warmer weather I don't know you'd evern notice the idle even if you closed off the entire thing! You sure would hear the RPM's drop fast though!

i know this topic is old, but i did this fix on my car for .99 cents, and it works great! Rpms drop instantly to 800 when i let off the throttle, it also makes the exhaust "burble" sounds nice! It took me a while to get used to the shifts but i got it, the only down side to this is when you turn your a/c on the car idles at 500 and sounds like it wants to die, mabye if i make the hole a bit bigger i can get it just right. But i went to autozone and got a flat peice of gasket (6" by 4") and took the old gasket off my car and traced it onto the gasket (there are 2 holes in the old gasket but the GT's only use 1, the other hole is for the MACH 1's they use both), but instead of cutting the hole the same size i made it 5/32 and put it on and it worked, just thought i'd let everyone know cause ppl were asking about it, i have a pic below of it....

You can use a copper pipe cap(won't melt after the car is shut off on a hot day)and drill a 3/16 hole in the top. Then insert the cap into the hose that runs between the intake pipe and the IAC.You can use electrical tape to make it fit tightly. If the idle is too slow you can open it up with a bigger drill.

I just did this mod this afternoon and it worked great.

I can rev the motor now and it actually slows down and comes to a nice idle and it still has plenty of natural engine momentum to shift easy from gear to gear while acceleration at an easy pace. It's not like the engine dives sharp when you let off the gas, it just comes down naturaly. The engine can actually be used to slow you down now on the twistys!

All I did was disconected the rubber tube between the little plastic box (not sure what it is called, it is about 1 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches) and the throttle body and placed a rubber hose that was 1/2 inch OD and 1/4 inch ID into that rubber tube and pushed it back together and started it up and let it idle for a couple of minutes to let the computer adjust and then reved the motor and it ran great.

Here is by far the best thread i've found about this problem.... All you need to fix it, can't wait till I have a chance to do it, got to be one of the most annoying things ever...

I was very surprised that this forum didn't have anything about it. I first learned of this back when I was a Ford Contour driver. It took forever for me to find the fix for the GT. Glad to share it all with you.

I am thinking about making a new plate with a slightly smaller hole. I've noticed that I still have a little hang and the computer can still idle the engine plenty high with A/C on. Ever notice slowing down coming to a stoplight in a 5-speed that the computer will idle the engine high like until the car has come to a stop or you are in neutral or maybe it's a matter of seconds? I think that indicates that the computer can still give plenty of air to the throttle body.
