What's the best way to clean my engine compartment?
Back in the old days we used to spray with simple green & take a power sprayer to it. But I don't think that'd be a good idea with the modular...ya know...

I don't suggest doing it. I used an engine cleaner, EngineBrite, and you spray it on the motor, let is soak for a few minutes, then spray it off with some water. After doing this my car ran like crap. I ended up having to replace all the spark plugs. The driver side plugs were the worst by far. Water got in under the coil packs and then caused hell. So, I've decided to never clean my motor again. Maybe there is a better way to do it, but I am ignorant of that method as of now.

I used this toxic, caustic smelling stuff... It's the exact same stuff as Forumla 409 that's in your kitchen except MUCH more concentrated... Comes in a purple bottle. Spray it on, rinse off with hose, call it good. I'm yet to have any problems with it wet... minus a little bit of the belt squeaking at first startup because it was wet.
Otherwise, made everything spotless.

Simple Green (1:1) is as good as any of the Engine Brite Foaming cleaners.
Lightly mist your engine with water, spray on the Simple Green, let it sit for just a few minutes, start the car and spray the engine down. If everything is put together properly under the hood you shouldn't have problems with water causing electrical problems.
Now if you have an air compressor, you are in perfect shape. After you have sprayed the engine off, keep it running and use an air hose to blow all the water you can find off of everything under the hood. There normally are pockets on the engine block where water will sit. Blow it out. Oh yeah, wear glasses!
Do this whenever you see the dust starting to collect under the hood. If your engine compartment was neglected for a long time you may need to brush some of the oily/greasy dirt off during the process. An old paint brush works really well.

Ive never had any problems using a pressure washer to clean the engines in any of my vehicles. I just covered up the coils with plastic. +1 on the simple green.

Damn it code, lol we must think the alike, that's what I was going to recommend the 2 step CD2 cleaner, comes as an engine decreaser/detailer. I've used on my car and clients cars before. Works great.
ORIGINAL: code3GT
If you can find the 2 step CD2, it works the best, makes it look brand new.
