Default Opinion needed on buying GT 96-2002

Im keeping a lookout for good deals on 4.6l gt. I'd like to make it quick, close to my fathers car (99 cobra). My mods would probley start with TB and spacer, Full exhaust, chip, intake. Then after that Id go into heads and cams. I just wanted to know what to look out for when buying that year range mustang, and which year ones might be particuly better then the other ones. It also has to be a 5 speed. Thanks for your time

You want to take the guesswork out of it, get 99-04... "I" wouldn't start with those exact mods in that order, especially if you want to keep up with the cobra. If I had to do it all over again, "I" would start with gears, some good tires, and throw nitrous on it.

first of all dont buy a 96-98 GT, if you want a GT get 99-04. but if you can you should try to find a 96-98 cobra, there about the same amount as the 99-04 GT's. good luck.

i would buy 01-04, the 99 and 00 have some issues they fixed in the 01 models, not to mention the 01's have the hood and side scoops and teh better rear spoiler, and they changed the transmission and suspension, and the radio is nicer. In 03 they did minor changes to the suspension .

go 99 and later. The early ones, like my 97 are slow as **** and mine seems to break down a lot.

Get as low milage as you can find as well, and when you go check them out, take them out and let it rip through all the gears... usually a WOT burn will show many problems you can't see while cruising... if you can get the car on a lift to thoroughly inspect the underside for leaks and problems
