Default How do you increase boost on a turbo?

Ok, seening all the turbo videos and setups lately i wanted to know how you ajust the level of boost a turbo is making? I have heard many people say all they do is ajust the waste gate.

you can adjust the wastegate or use a manual or electronic boost controller

theres a spring in the wastegate i believe. some turbos are adjustable.

An internal wastegate turbo is adjusted by the actuator arm by shortening it. This puts more pressure on the actuator spring making the wastegate harder to open so more boost is created. The actuator arm should be set with 1/8" of preload. This the amount of distance you have to pull the actuator arm to place it on the wastegate's post. The a MBC or EBC will control how much boost pressure the actutaor sees, thus changing the boot lebel. Boost pressure pushes the arm and wastegate open. The longer it takes to open the more boost it creates. Like SC every 15psi doubles an engine's HP.
I have not seen a good set-up for the mustang and the kits that place the turbo where the mufflers are is ridiculous. You want short route piping. By the time the exhaust gas would reach the turboo it would have lost a great deal of it's heat which helps spin the turbine. Go with a SC. Mark

Well, close... A boost controller intercepts the boost signal running from the Compressor side to the Compressor Blow-Off Valve in some cars, while others, it is done so by limiting Boost by adjusting Airflow maps...

There are different styles...

Was there a specific model you had in mind??

Wastegates can be adjusted, and is the more generic method, since not every car uses a Compressor Blow-Off. Some use a Bypass, which I believe are the types in which you would get a beefier spring for the Wastegate, or a shorter actuator arm for more tension..

They all have BOV's. That releases the compressed air in the upper piping which would reverse flow when the throttle is closed when shifting, bad for the turbo as the wheels can be turning at 80,000 rpm's and then the boost would hit the compressor and the turbo would surge.
The map NEVER changes as it is dictated by the mechanical features of the turbo's design, housing a/r's wheel sizes and turbine flow, etc. Mark

no, they all don't have blow off valves, some use an internal by-pass valve i.e. srt-4

There are plently of great turbo kits for both 2v and 4v cars that are not remote turbo setups.

Not all cars that are turboed are like DSM's... If I'm not mistaken, Subaru's use a slightly different method as well...

Also, the new Evo, which has the 4g64 has a feature in the ECU, that limits the stock turbo to 38lbs/min. After that, it begins dumping boost, dropping at like 1800RPM's before redline..
