which way to go?
Well, Youve all heard this question a few times but when i searched it i didnt get exactly what im asking for. What is the best way to tune my car?
I was looking at a sct chip or a sct tuner. my car is a 97 GT with CAI, Throttle body plentum combo, UDP's, o/r x pipe, flomaster catback and its a 5 speed. I need the tuner/chip to get rid of my Check engine light caused by the x pipe and to be able to run 87 or 93 octane gas. I need to be able to change the octane tune because if my mom is with me she wont let my buy 93 even though it will only cost a whole 2 dollars more a tank. I like the chip because the way you can change tunes on the fly. but will it get rid of my check engine light? Im kinda scaired of the tuner because im not exactly sure how to tune it my self and i need to be able to change the tunes fairly quick. Can someone give me the advantages/disadvantages of the two.All help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

RE: which way to go?
a handheld is absolulty the best way to go.
You don't really have to do any programming with the handheld. It will come with a tune installed on it, and you will just have to dump it in. You can mess with settings, but you don't have to.
A chip, once it is vurned, is burned. You can get a chip with 2 differn't octane tunes, but you just need to tell your mom youhave to get 93, and that your paying anyway (unless your not, in that case, get a job).

On the 93 octane thing im 15 so i kinda got to do what she says. but im 16 in 2 months!woohoo! so ill just order it and tell her i have too have 93. Will the tune they send be tuned to the mods i have. or will it just be a 93 octane tune. And wheres the best place to get the tuner and tune from? Thanks

Thanks for the help everyone. What kind of gains will i get from the tune?i've heard anywhere from 7-20 is this true? is there any other bolt on parts that will work well with my tuner? A pi swap is in the near future so im waiting till then to do cams and all that stuff.

different websites provide out of the box custom tunes for your car. You tell them your mods and they do a basic tune. A dyno is definately the best way to go but I wouldn't waste the money on it now.
