Can't get into Reverse!!!
 

I have a 4.6 with a manual stock tranny and sometimes when I havn't driven the car for a about a day or so, the shifter won't let me into reverse! I don't know why but I have my foot to the floor and I even try putting it in gear and then into first but it doesn't happen. It's pretty dangerous because I let it in neutral down the driveway and it wouldn't shift as soon as I was in the street.

Has this happened to anyone? I try to push hard but the gears wont move. No grinding but just like there isn't a gear there?

Today I put it in 4th, then reverse and it worked. But only with 4th. Weird?

reverse is weird anyways i sometimes you just have to let it sit in neutral for a second before putting it in reverse or just pull really hard

sounds like your synchro is going bad. Welcome to having a mustang 5 speed.

Mine sometimes won't go into reverse, but if I put it in another gear first and then try reverse it always works. It is always when my car is cold or hasn't been driven like yours.

its got a really gay lock out system, and i doubt its a syncro, reverse may not even have syncros, syncros are so u dont have to double clutch when ur shifting, and sense u dont really shift in or out of reverse while ur moving u dont really need syncros

try shifting to 5th gear and then slide it into Reverse... works everytime when I have a hard time putting it into R.

:D The Ford tranny specialist is the one that told me that my syncho is out in reverse. Sorry but im gonna have to go with him on this one.

im not saying that its impossible that they have syncros, but the syncros will on give u problems when u are moving, u need to read up about what syncors are for, even if ur syncros were bad u should still be able to get the car into gear, its just a matter of using the clutch right

No it's not the synchros. Because all the other gears work perfectly. I can even shift without clutch once in a while[:-]! But reverse seems to always give me problems when it's not warmed up. I tried putting it in 5th, but it's like I said, only 4th works for me. Can't explain it but thats how it is.

And it doesn't happen all the time, only some times, even when it's cold it can still work sometimes. But more on average when cold.

if u read the manual it says ur supposed to go 3rd 4th reverse, ive found that sometimes i have to let off the clutch after i start it and then press it again, idk y, fords gay
