There are plenty of exhaust systems that should cost less than 1k. Are you looking for just a cat back, or are you looking to get a mid pipe too?

You can get an off road mid pipe for roughly $175. I have a MAC mid pipe, it works great for me. I got my exhaust for right at $400.
I have the mac mid pipe, flowmaster 40 series(they were the weld in's, the whole cat back system will cost more) and silverline 3.5in tips. I did all the installation myself and saved a few bucks there.

Heres a clip of mine

Also, try looking here. They have all kinds of exhaust systems for our cars

If your car is a DD I would definately look at a stainless exhaust so you don't have to worry about rust/corrosion with rain/snow/salt.

I've been researching this too. You do want to decide what your overall plan is first. Are you going to do headers eventually too? Then you have to take that into consideration with a mid-pipe. If you just want it louder, go with the flows. The big difference in price will be if they are stainless or not. I don't drive it everyday, so it's not much of an issue for me.

if u want loud...i would definitely check into slp, borla, or bassani. im not a big fan of magnaflow, but every person has there own opinion. borla stingers are the way to go though if u ask me. ive always been a die hard x pipe kinda guy, but i just got my h pipe and i lov it. its a whole nother sound. trust me ull get tired of those flowmasters quick also. after a while it seems as if they just arent loud enough. check into youtube.com or mustangexhaust.com.

I agree - listen to as much as you can before. It's sorta hard to determine how loud they are on the net though.

IF youre not planning on headers...

then I believe you can get EVERY combination of uncatted midpipe and any catback for under 1 grand EXCEPT, if you purchase a Bassanni or SLP X (if they evn come uncatted) or a MRT o/r H pipe

Figure that the most exspensive catback is Bassanni (help me out here..700$?)

A MAC o/r H is about 130, and MILs are right around 80, so you'll stay under that 1g mark

but then again, if you have to get a catted midpipe, that'll be extar, and likely throw Borla and Bassanni out of the price range

good luck, and like they said, ask around, look for as many unbiased opinions as possibl (wich is tough..lol)

most of your sound will come from the cat-back.

my magnaflow magnapacks have been connected to 3 different mid-pipes and i could not be happier with the 'packs
