Default 5th Grinding occasionally

Maybe someone has an idea what's wrong with my car. It doesn't happen all the time, but every once in a while I'll shift into 5th and it grinds. What's the deal?? I was kind of thinking my clutch is pretty old so maybe it's not fully disengaging. What do you guys thing? I know for a fact there's plenty of tranny fluid b/c I recently changed and filled with Royal Purple. Well, any help I appreciate. Oh, in case your wondering it's a 2000 GT with a T45.

Bad syncros. Go in it easy from now on or else it'll break and you'll have to rebuild your tranny. It needs to be rebuilt anyway, but if you go easy you can decide when it needs to be done.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Anyone had a T45 rebuilt?? Know what kind of cost I'm looking at?

I did my own. For a normal rebuild, parts were about $200. If you want better and stronger syncros (which I highly reccomend), parts will be about $300. I'm not sure what labor would be. I guess around $500...? I don't sudgest doing it yourself unless you have some kind of mechanical backround. If you don't, you wouldn't even be able to piece the syncros together (I think they're 9 pieces for each syncro), let alone try to put the trans back together. Good luck for whatever you do.

Cool, I'll probably have my mechanic buddy do it which has rebuilt many T5's but never T45. I'm sure they're not much different. Where did you get your kit at? And I will definately go with stronger synchro's so do you recommend a place to buy? Thanks for your help 96GT....

I bought mine at a swap meet about 2 years ago. They must be good syncros because I don't have a problem yet. I think they were HD syncros, but I'm not sure. A T5 and a T45 rebuild is almost identical. I've done them both. They both are internally almost identical. If your buddy can do a T5, he can do a T45. The first time I did a T45, I could've swore it was a T5 until I saw the bellhousing and tailshaft. The wiring harness plugs and locations are different as well as the speed sensor on the side. Good luck... And make sure you wear glasses. There's like 10 snap rings in there and they fly everywhere! I cought 1 in my eye and I had to wear a patch for 3 weeks. It sucked big time.
