i put in 5 quarts, does it matter what year the car is? mine is an 02 GT

Read my edited first reply. I believe all the engines are probably the same but I checked the 02 as well as the 04 and both are 6 qt. However, like I said, most engines don't drain every drop of oil. There is usually a good quart or more that is in the passageways that wont drain out.

The way that I normally do it that I learned from my dad is to drain the oil, then dump it from whatever I caught it in, into smaller measurable containers for storage until I can dispose of it. Milk cartons work perfect for this. Then you can see exactly how much you drained and know exactly how much to add back in. Also, if you know exactly how much you have you can get an idea of if it's burning oil by keeping track of how much you have in the car at any given time.

I use 6 qt's & it's 1/2 way between min. & max. it say's 6 qt's in all the manual's I have . also had a 98 cobra that was 6 qt's also .

Thats exactly where mine is with 6 qts as well. I just add almost another 1/2 quart and it brings it to the full mark. I called the dealer on this and they said the owners manual is incorrect.

i've also heard that the dipstick is "stamped" incorrectly, i don't know how far off it is though

Well I got my number from mechanic shop software, however it's more than likely the same as the manual, so who knows who's right. As long as you show full you should be good.

Look in the damn owners manual. I know that in 97, the gts take five and the cobra takes six.
