I've had the same question in the past.
Easy answer is to replace it. Unfortunatley the funds aren't always there. My CEL light came on and it turned out to be related to the EGR. The same day I got the codes pulled at AutoZone, I purchased some SeaFoam and ran it through the car that night. The CEL went off the next day. Sure it still comes on now and then, but it goes away.
Anyway, how about some intelligent responses now...
