Default Loud Grinding Sound

So this just started out of know where. I drive a 2004 Mustang GT. When I hold the clutch in and start their is a loud metal grinding sound. When I take my foot off the clutch it still does it but not as bad. Once I get moving the sound stops until I press the clutch in to switch gears. Back to the loud grinding sound. Its weird if I'm still in Neutral the sound still happens, but if I'm moving in neutral it stops. Any ideas what it could be. I thought about throw out bearing but not sure what else might be damaged.

throw out bearing and/or clutch

gotta yank trans and inspect. Dont forget to check bearing retainer on transmission if the TOB took a crap it can dig in to that.

kerrysc, I'm with White Fox GT. Sounds like a classical case of bad throw-out bearing.

+1 on throwout bearing. Mine used to make a grinding whirling noise on my old clutch. Back when I replaced it, the throwout bearing came out in pieces.

antwaan, you made my day. Your statement about coming out in pieces got me laughing. You reminded me of back in the day when the new "4-speeds" were spitting out throw out bearings faster than we could replace them.

Hey, I see this is an old post, was there any solution? Here's what my son's 2002 4.6L is doing. Is it the clutch or transmission? I won't stay started, and dies just after starting unless I rev it up, and then a posible burning smell.
