lost transponder key
i lost(well my kid lost)my original transponder key for my 97 mustang.i did not have any double.when i look on the net,i find this info for my car:
Ford has three systems in use at present:
PATS I, PATS II & EPATS (encryped keys)
PATS I: Have a transponder key made by code, fitting, or duplicating. Follow the owners manual for programming key into system.
PATS I Vehicles:
1996-97 Mustang 1998 Navigator
1996-97 Taurus & Sable 1998 Contour & Mystique
1997-98 Expedition 1997-98 Lincoln Mark VIII
PATS II: Requires two original keys be available. If only one key is available-or if keys are lost, programming requires special equipment at a Ford Dealer or a Locksmith that has the (NGS) programmer. Able Locksmith has the (NGS).
so my car is a pats1.here is the info i found on this system:
duplicating: Place original key in ignition and turn to 'on' position. On some models a theft security light should turn on. Wait a few seconds until light turns off. Remove original key and insert new duplicate transponder key. (Removal of original and insertion of duplicate must be done within 10 seconds). Theft security light will turn on for a few seconds. When light turns off, duplicate key is programmed.
Originating: Make an operating transponder key by code or fitting. Insert new transponder key in ignition and turn to 'on' position. Theft security light will stay on for 10-15 minutes. (Some models may use a flashing light.) When theft security light turns off, turn new transponder key to 'off' position. Repeat this procedure two more times. (Each cycle must be started within 5 minutes after theft security light turns off.) After third cycle, new key will operate vehicle. Any keys which formerly operated the ignition will now be inoperative
the thing is my ford dealer tell me i absolutly need to bring the car to them.wich meen a towing fee also.and one locksmith told me the same thing.
does anybody have done this himself before?(programing the master key)
thanks

RE: lost transponder key
Nah man thats strictly a Ford dealership to reprogram a new key. I dont know of anyone who has done it themselves well unless they're a Ford tech with the equipment lol

RE: lost transponder key
I hate to say it, but you're going to have to pay the towing fee to your nearest dealership. When you get to Ford you're going to have to buy two keys at about $70 a piece. (CA prices, includes programing)
You might want to consider buying a third key while you are at it and program it yourself. ($20-$30)
Good luck.
