speed limiter?

Alrgiht, I was screwin around last night (in a responsible manner, mind you ;)) and when I shifted to fourth, all was good. I kept accelerating to about 5 grand, then my car jerked forward. It felt like someone hit the brakes or something. That scared the **** out of me because I thought that the car didn't have a governor so I must have really screwed something up.

Afterward, I slowed down and continuted to just cruise around. Everything seemed fine, so my question is do all/some cars have a speed governor?

BTW my car is a 99 GT convertible, 5 speed with the mods in my sig. I do not have a speedometer recalibrator yet, so my speedo is off. Also I do not know what the stock tire/wheel size was because when I got the car it had aftermatket 17 inch rims (245/45/17 BFG Comp T/A tires)

Thanks for any feedback.

RE: speed limiter?

The top speed is supposed to be 151, i dont think its a speed governer its just the rev limiter which is at about 6k

What spark plugs are you running?

eehhh... no clue on the spark plugs (still stock ones maybe?) The car has 40,000 miles on it. Is now a good time to change 'em?

Well you may have described a misfire (maybe) and I'd prolly check all the coil on packs for a good connection at the plugs, or pull the plugs to see what kida condition they're in...

The speed limiter on the Machs is 126 for an auto and 151 for the manual, I'm not sure if its the same for the GT, But if you have 4:10's and have not changed the speedo calibration it will be off by apox 20% in which case you would be hitting the limiter alot sooner. I know when I hit the speed limiter on mine (it's an Auto) it seems like it shuts the car down for a few seconds, them picks back up till I hit the limiter again.

Are you guys sure??? I've got a '99 GT Conv. and my gov. won't let me get above 125mph. As soon as I hit 125mph it backs me down to 120mph. What's the easiest way around this???

I have a 98 gt 5 speed that shuts of at 125mph. I am not sure if it is a govern or what. I didn't think a gt had a govern on it. I don't think it is a rev limiter. I can tac to about 6k and no problems. I changed my gears to 373's and my speedometer is about 20mph off. So when I hit 125 it cuts the engine out . But at that speed my tac is only around 4k. ANd I know it will let me tac to 6k at lower speeds. DOes anyone know a way to turn off this govern or what ever it is. I dont have the money to get a diablo turner. I have heard you could do it that way. CAN anyone please help!!

RE: speed limiter?

From what I have read, GTs that had the 16 inch wheel option had tires that weren't rated for high speeds above 130ish., hence why Ford put the limiter govenor on.

I don't know of any other way to remove the limiter other than using a tuner.

RE: speed limiter?

A tuner is the only way to disable/change the speed limiter.
