Default RE: tire size question?

ORIGINAL: DILOstang01

now i have hankook 245/45/zr17 but i have seen tires that are 275/40/17 and different sizes like that. i was wondering if that is a better tire and also if it fits all 17 inch rims or is the 275/40 part that makes it ot fit? i need to get better tires for the back so i can runj better at the track but i know diito about tires and i would like to have a little knowledge about which direction to go in and thats where you guys come in thanks.
the 245 is the width. the higher the #, the wider. 275 is obviously wider than a 245. while 40 is the height of the profile. the 40 is a little smaller than a 45.

Yes the 245 and 275 refer to the width of the tire...it's an actual measurement in millimeters. The 40 and 45 refers to the height of the sidewall as a % of the tire width...so a 275/40 is about the same sidewall height as the 245/45s that come on the 17" rim.

Nomo is right that the 40 series is a smaller percentage of sidewall vs. tire width, but because the 275 tire is wider, they will balance out well with the 245/45.

That's great info. I was never really sure what all the numbers meant other than the 17 being the size of the rim. I have read where people were talking about 17 x 9 and
17 x 10 or 10.5 and such. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would think that the 9, 10 or 10.5 would be the width of the rim? And if so, would that mean that an upgrade to a wider tire for the rear would also require an upgrade to a wider rim as well? If so, which width would be recommended for, say, a 275 tire? Thanks.

You dont have to upgrade to a bigger wheel. Just because Ford puts 245-45 stock doesnt mean you cant get 275-40's put on at a local tire store. Get some Nitto 555R's. They fit just right from what I hear.

Thanks for the info. I've heard lots of good things about Nitto's. I'll definitely look into those when I get new tires.

This is exactly right. The "R" before the 17 is for "Radial" and you're going to want to get a tire that is Z rated or higher. The letter rating tells you how fast you can safely spin the tire without it falling apart on you.
