RE: stock MAF - whats with the screen?
As a matter of fact, aftermarket meters are just stock mass air meters in a bigger tube with no screen - but their calibrated to work without the screen.

OK so to be more specific aftermarket meters are just stock mass air meters in a bigger tube with no screen and have the post removed.
To my knowledge all of the aftermarket manufacurers of mass air meters use the factory stock electronics which are recalibrated. The screen is the biggest restriction of the entire intake tract.

you know that if the car is running and you put your finger in front of the screen, it fvcks the idle all up until you take your finger away. Obviously because it changes the flow of the air but interesting, still.

29!! Good grief!! The best I've gotten on a road trip, no A/C was ~23 mpg. That's insane out of a V8. Normally I run 21-22 unless I've got my foot in it a lot. Course a lot of my driving is highway.

I think me driving at 4000 rpm is effecting my milage... just a bit.
I read in fast ford mag that the screen is absoultely useless and wont effect anything if gone... on the negative side.
They said youll get more airflow at higher rpms with it gone.

no doubt. I cannot see how a 99+ 4.6L is capable of 29 MPG. Before any modifications were done to my car, other than a K&N and flowmasters, I was averageing 20 MPG, with a all time best of about 23-24MPG.

I'll come to his defense. I average 19 or 20 in daily driving because my foots always in it. When I go out of town, depending on the day (light traffic=faster) I do ~75-85mph for ~130 miles and 85-95 for ~130 miles and average 21-24mpg. I had to go to Dallas once and the traffic was so heavy I HAD to do 65mph the whole way.
I was so shocked... tap tap tap on the gas guage... pulled over to put gas in it at ~150 miles and 3/4 tank of gas cause something has to be wrong with my guage. I only had to put in just over 5 gallons of gas which when I calculated was 28.4mpg!!! OMG I was flored Too bad my foot hasn't had the opportunity to do 65 for a long period of time since so now I still average my 23 or 24mpg on long trips. dang right foot [:@] hahahaha

RE: stock MAF - whats with the screen?
well out of boredom yesterday i pulled the screen out.
i left the battery unplugged for about half an hour, ensuring that the computer would do a reset. don't know anything about this, someone suggested it above and it sounded like a reasonable thing to do. i also put the rubber "gasket" that held the screen back in, so there wouldn't be any leaks.
initially the car had a somewhat rough start, and idled roughly for the first 10 seconds, after than everything was back to normal. took it out for a spin and noticed an improvement in throttle response. it just seemed more eager to get to and live at 3000+ rpms. I noticed a small improvement in power, more pep is all, nothing major.
i didn't get past 4500 rpm, i want to believe that everything is fine before i tax it. i've since started it/drove it twice more and there appears to be no problems yet.
