Default Need a better exhaust sound

I currently have BBK shorties, off roah h-pipe and flowmaster 40 series. I wanted to know which component of the exhaust gives it the deep, throaty growl I hear from other mustangs that mine seems to lack. I had XE-262AH and am replacing them with XE-270AH as soon as I get my motor fixed. I was wondering if long tubes change the sound much because if it does, I'll go ahead an do that while the motor's out because we all know how much of a pain in the a** changing headers on a 4.6 are. Since I have to get a new mid-pipe, I'll probobly get cats on this one because CA is pretty strict about that stuff. Do the LT's actually change the exhaust sound?

X-Pipes usually give that throaty, raspy growl. Get an o/r X-pipe and you'll definitely be sounding like that.

H pipes are deeper than x pipes i don't know what you're talking about wes. You're treading water with that o/r pipe, definitely get a catted pipe in CA.

What really opened my system up was the Long tubes, No-cats, x pipe, and magnaflows w/ turndowns ... I truely believe that long tubes change the sound among the other components of the exhaust system.. I really want to switch over to an O/R H .. by buddy has one and its such a different sound than the X ...

Yeah, but I live in CA. Right now I have no cats and it's a HUGE fine if I get caught. I would like at least a pair of hi flows. Do cats make much of a difference in the sound?

Yeah, cats do make a difference in sound. They cut the volume a bit and make it sound more muffled. Its not necessarily bad, just pick a louder cat back to go with the catted midpipe and you're all set.

I went from a catted magnaflow x to an o/r slp x and it sounds great, but never sounded bad with the magnaflow. For a deep exhaust, Id look into bassani. Theyre expensive but sound amazing. If I could afford it, id switch my borlas for a bassani in a heartbeat. My friend has a bassani exhaust on his lightning (I know its a different motor) but he revved it side by side with another lightning that had flowmasters. There was no comparison, the bassani was killer...
