Congrats, you're gonna love it. I'm not sure how different it will be over the stock Cobra shifter though. I think they are already a lot better than the GT shifters (or is that just newer cars?) Either way, I'm sure you'll love it. I'll be ordering mine in a day or two and installing next weekend when I change my fluids (perfect time to change transmission fluid).

I'm SO close to ordering an MGW, everybody has been raving about it. Granted I just got my car a few days ago and it's my first manual transmission car, so maybe I should wait until I've mastered what I got first.

Go for it whenever you want. An aftermarket short shifter changes how shifting feels a little, but it doesn't change how you shift. It's not like changing a clutch where it will bite harder. You're still going to be taking it from all the way in first gear, all the way down to second, so it just makes it easier.

On top of that, for a beginner, you will usually take longer to shift, so a shorter shifter helps you shift faster, and not drop RPMs so much when you shift. Also, aftermarket shifters such as the Tri-Ax and MGW make it damn near impossible to miss third gear. Granted I never did that learning to drive my manual, I can certainly tell how much easier it slides into 3rd now.
