Good stuff

Pop the hood and grab the belt between the alt and the ps pump pulley. Try to twist or turn it over. If you can turn/twist it 180* or more easily, then it's too loose. If that is the case, then the idler may be jacked up.
Make sure your car's off when you try that
I didn't state that because I assume he's smart enough not to do that. If he's not, then Darwin and natural selection win again. I'm good with either outcome.

its probably as simple as a new battery. If it's working some of the time then it make sense that its the battery. The alternator won't suddenly stop working and then start working again the next day.

ok my question is once the car starts, if its just the battery thats wrong, will the car loose power while running? it did it again just now,
the radio turned off wouldnt turn back on the car was still running the but the more i steped on teh car the less it woud run and more power it would loose.....

thx guys....
well after berly making it home last night, and the car dying and not wanting to start back up,
i get up today in the morning and boom the car starts like nothing was ever wrong with it!!
what the hell is wrong with my car?!?!?!!?

Maybe it's an 03 Ford thing...

My mom's 03 Taurus did the same exact thing. It happened at a cemetery... It started, but it had no power, battery light came on, and she could only go about 15 MPH. Car later shut off on her. Come back to it about two hours later and it starts and runs fine. Took it to the Ford Dealer and they said nothing was wrong with it. Now she's looking to get rid of it. (I'm trying to convince her to get a Saleen ! but not likely)

Check the battery voltage before starting your car. Should be around 12.1-12.8 volts for a fully charged battery.

Check the battery voltage after the car is running at idle with all electrical accessories off. Should be around 13.6-14.5 volts for a healthy charging system.

Obviously, low voltage on a charged battery is a bad battery.

A battery capable of starting your car but tests low on voltage after the car is running, is a bad alternator.
