my car sounds pretty good, really throaty. the fitting sucks though, I had to take the torch to it a few times to stop banging on the drivers side of the crossmember under hard acceleration. A few people I talked to that had 98's had the same problem with x-pipes so maybe it was just the year. it's quiet under normal acceleration but when you mash on the gas it sounds great!! haven't had any other problems and I had it for about a year. help this helps.

having a catted X pipe is worthless IMO (unless you HAVE TO HAVE CATS)

Anymore, there is little difference between hi-flow cats and straight pipe. 2-3hp by most estimates. More expensive, yes, but no emissions problems and no hassles at inspection.

I've heard of the term straight pipes but I'm not familiar with how it differs from a o/r or catted mid pipe, and how can it still pass emissions?

stright pipes is ZERO resistance on your exhaust. From your headers its just a pipe with no Cat or muffler , iam not sure if a cross over counts or not. I dont see why not.
