The smell will tell you a lot.Coolant has a sweet steam smell.Oil smells like ,well, burnt oil.At 10,000 miles you should'nt use a noticable amount of oil.

Usually a little smoke when you first crank a car up is from oil seeping by the valve seals. Some smoke during driving usually means rings are worn. An extreme amount of WHITE smoke is usually a blown head gasket.

Do a compression check, if there isn't a big difference between compression in the cylinders, I would just save yourself the pain and regularly monitor your oil levels.

As for everyone else, time to open up the engine and get to work on head gaskets.

well the check engine light is on , iam just gonna take it to a shop and have them charge me money to tell me whats wrong. [:@]

Damn man, I bought an OBD II and that has to be my best investment. Everytime it rains in Tx in floods the street I live off of. The water level gets high enough to swamp my air filter which messes with the A/F ratio and of course gets to the MIL eliminators and gives me a high circuit from being wet. So I bought the OBD II and I have had to turn the light off like four times since. I figure it cost $85.00 here to turn off the light and to tell you whats wrong... I bought my OBD II for $120.00.. so you do the math.

GO BUY ONE is my point. LOL

well, see im kinda in the same boat, everyonce inawhile when i start my car itll blow some white smoke, but its everyonce inawhile, and it goes away reak quick, the head gaskets are new but maybe i put them on wrong? idono im alil worried about it, anybody have any ideas? but for sxgt im thinkn blown head gasket
Aren't you also having problems with overheating? I'd be willing to bet when you did the headswap your gaskets went in wrong, or torqued wrong, or something. If your getting smoke AND overheating to the point of blowing coolant out the cap it's got to be head related.

As for SXGT everybody here already beat me to it...probably head gasket related. If you want to check compression as someone suggested, a pressure guage you screw into your spark plug holes is a cheap investment and will quickly diagnose head problems.

Dude Autozone and Advance both will check your ODB and clear the light for free, so $120 is still too much. <grin>
