Default Serpentine belt

today i put in my new alternator, when i took it off, i didnt bother loosening the serpentine belt. now that i put it back on, obviously i cant get the belt back on the alternator pulley. how do i loosen the the belt? i think that i started to unscrew the tension release pulley, but i had to leave half way through my job. i will finish the job tomorrow. can anyone give me a pic or diagram on how to loosen the belt?

On the spring loaded arm that adds tension to the serpintine belt you will find a square hole take a 1/2 drive socket wrench and pull back the arm.

wait, whats the tool look like? i see the square hole on the end of the arm. i stick the 1/2 drive socket wrench in there, and pull upwards on it?
I dont remember the exact direction. You should pull it in the opposite direction that it is pushing on the belt.
If i remember right it down towards the ground.
The whole arm should piviot which will give you a ton of slack on the belt.
There should be a diagram of the belt path on a sticker in the engine compartment verifiy that you are routed right.
Sorry its kinda hard to describe this way.

I just replaced mine on my 98 GT, just put the 1/2" breaker bar in and push down. I also have a bracket that I had to remove to make it loosen the tension, right in front of/on the tensioner.

i took off the bolts holding the bracket on, theres the screws under the bracket going into the arm. do i take those out to?

You should only remove the two bolts and the bracket will come off. The 1/2" breaker bar is just a solid bar with a 4 point square on the end. It's the same thing as a 1/2" rachet but it just doesn't ratchet, it's just a solid steel bar. So stick your 1/2" rachet/or breaker bar in the hole and git-r-done(sorry, had to say it)

Unless there is a change from my 96 to your 98 you should not have to take any bolts off to put your belt on.
Your socket wrench is proublly 3/8 drive, if you dont want to buy a 1/2 drive then just buy a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter from the hardware store. it should not take too much pressure.
If there was a change from 96 to 98 then I apoligize for giving the bad info.
