how long will a 4.6 last if you barely to moderately put your foot in it

Two of the key factors in how long an engine lasts is how well the parts fit together before break in. If piston rings and bearings are too tight or too loose the motor will not wear in properly.
The other factor is break in itself. The motor must not be driven at any one RPM for too long and should not be abused or over heated as the parts wear in.
The oil should be changed right after the break in to get rid of metal particles etc.
Then you have the best chance of a long life engine.
I believe engines from warmer climates last longer becuase they reach normal temperature faster - engine wear and sludge build up increase in cold engines.
My 5.00 was sold with nearly 200 000 miles on it. The guy who bought it took the motor out and apart to do some mods. He was amazed at how clean and new the inside was.
The reason was probably that I used synthetic oil ( Mobil 1 )

The Inteded service life of a mudular engine as stated by fords owners manuals is 150,000 miles. You can expect more or less.

I'm pushing close to 160,000 miles on my car, and don't burn oil/coolant... In fact, I'd go as far, as to say that my engine runs pretty well for that much abuse.. Last time I had a look at some of the engine components, they still looked pretty fresh...
Things can just break, as well.. Bad casting, or additional oil contaminents, can cause premature failure...
This is a fairly broad question.. Anything could happen to trigger engine failure..
Your engine could have perfect compression right now, and in a half hour, you could accidentally bottom out, or hit a small animal, disrupting your oil pan seal.. An hour later, your engine is toast..

Driving your car like a grandmother and constantly babying it will actually do more harm than good. Carbon will plug up the engine and next thing you know, valves won't seat properly. These engines were made to run, they love it.

It will last past 100,000, but it will be crap, it will consume more oil, and burn more gas. I know people with 400+ k miles on 4.6, worth it? Hardly, they are pieces of crap and they still baby the motor, its not worth it. Just rebuild or get a new engine at 100,000 if you into performance driving, if not, do it at 200,000 the latest, or get a new car.

I fixed what you should have put in your post. Saying all mod motors are crap after 100,000 is total BS

well some of you are answering different questions - running and running strong "putting close to 50k mile hp down" are two VERY different things - at 150k miles it may be running quite well and in no danger of failure - but there is basically no way in hell its still putting 250 to the tires

I beg to differ..
If an engine is lubricated properly, and has regular maintenance, w/ little beating, the engine should last 400,000+ miles... The only thing that causes wear in your engine is a break-down in lubrication.
A couple causes for breakdown:
- Contamination in oil
- Lack of oil/improper viscosity
- Part failure
Honestly... If you take care of your car, and fix things/maintain things at their respective intervals, there is little to no reason why your engine should fail. Modifying your car negates all of these characteristics, since you're now extended tolerances past factory expectations..
