Common probs with the 4.6

RE: Common probs with the 4.6
yes, the valves open to allow air to enter the cylinder and then close to allow for compression of the air and fuel.
air and fuel burn at a fixed ratio. the more air you can get into the motor, the more fuel you can burn, the more power you get.
more valves do not automatically mean more power, but in general, they do. fyi, the "aftermarket" heads you see for the 2v 4.6 are just worked over stock castings. if you look at a 5.0 catalog, you'll see that they have true aftermarket heads (not worked over stock castings). if someone ever makes a decent aftermarket head, it'll totally change the modding of our cars.
the heads are the reason you see ls1's and the 05+ GT's responding well to mods. for them, their heads are not a bottle neck, but for us they are.

the rack and pinion bushings on my 03 gt at 30k are shot... other than that there is not enough engine bay room for my headlight and foglight hid ballasts! grr..

And the 2v heads suck... they only flow for 70% volumetric efficency for the engine totally ported+polished. A stock 4v head almost outflows a 2v head with every bit of possible work done to it, it's really awful.
The 2v is dead already though, we never saw aftermarket parts at a reasonable price (because it was "new technology") and now with the 3v around and being embraced like it is, we never will. I have my doubts we're going to ever see anything amazing for the 2v as all the companies have moved on to the 3v. 96-04 GTs just get screwed [&:]
Just as redass said, the heads on our cars is the real limiting factor, which explains why bolt-ons do next to nothing, everything that's on the car is "better" than the heads are, so opening up the intake side is really pointless because you're still trying to flow through the crappy heads. The exhaust side of things isn't a problem, Ford managed to get that right, meaning exhaust upgrades will actually net you some decent power, but still nothing amazing.
Oh and everything I listed before are just issues that are NOT already covered by a TSB/recall.

That problem you're describing is most common on 96-98's. Although whenever your intake manifold has the plastic crossover you're at risk.
99convertstang- is your car pi swapped? if it isn't then you must be running into some really crappy drivers. Either that or you're talking about new edge six bangers.

Even the aluminum crossover manifold can fail. I had one crack where the heater core hose connects. I'm at least on my 3rd intake...
