I'm not looking for other people's opinions on what i "should" do. All i'm asking is if a 17x9 5x4.5" 24mm wheel will work with my 245/45-17 tires.

yes you can run a 17 x 9. Alot of people around my home town run 245/45s on a 17 x 9. Some people recommend not to, but I really see no issue, the wheel looks fine on the tire. Thats whats on the front of my car. If you buy 17 x 8 anything you'll be dissapointed with the stance, also you may want to consider going with 17 x 10.5s on the back and buying tires for the back only... gives them a mean look.

20" is a dont do it on a Mustang, period. 18"s are the biggest i'd go.
I know you said you wanted to keep the tires, but I would really do some searching if you're going to get some 17x9's.. they'll be fine, but imo, they look a little off, normally if you have a 17x9 you want to run 275's atleast. the 245 on a 17x9 should work fine, but it might look a little off (depending on the brand tire you have) - before you buy them, I would really suggest finding some pictures of them to make sure you like them.

Sorry I don't... I really don't know of many people with the 245's on the 17x9 either... What I would honestly suggest - is to keep 17x8s on the front, and buy 2 new rear tires... 275/40's on the 17x9... so it would look like this:
17x8s with the same tires you have now... and 17x9 on the rear with 275/40's on the back... or could replace all 4 and do 17x9 with 275's up front and 315's on 17x10.5 on the rear. Or like one of my buddies is doin, is a 17x8 in the front with the stock 245's, and 17x10.5 deep dishes with 315s on the rear...
