car problem??

car problem??
i turned on my car this afternoon after stopping at the store and it did something really weird at least to me.
i cranked it up and it didnt seem want to idle all the way its like it was gonna die but it wouldnt die all the way it was bouncing beetween 200 and 400 rpm no where near the normal 1000 or so i paused a few seconds then my first intinct was to give it gas so i did and it reved up like normal then idled down to normal and was fine i was totally confused what could this be???
