The muffler shop guy is full of crap. It will not hurt your engine at all. It will sound like pure ****. Don't do it!!!!!!!

My question is why do you want straight pipes?[:'(] It shouldn't matter whether it would hurt your engine or not. For the sake of things I'll tell you it will hurt your engine just so you won't do it.
+1 deffently don't do it

what made u want to do it in the first place? straight pipes i mean

dude, don't do it. You might as well buy yourself a 1977 pickup with cherrybomb glass packs. That's how much credability you'd lose. Just don't do it. You can think about it, just don't do it. Keep mufflers of some kind on your car. Don't go the redneck mullet route. And don't do the 3 foot tall aluminum "kevlar" wing either.

I've got a 98 GT with just straight pipes and cats and it sounds awesome. I havent had one complaint. When you open it up it sounds mean and at cruising speed and idle its not very loud at all.

Well I went ahead and put flows on it anyway. I can't believe how much power I gained. It's like something woke up in there. I don't know why I went with straight pipes to start with. I guess I wanted to be loud and did not have enough money at the time for anything else. But thanks for all the replies.

Here's a link to an explanation of exhaust dynamics.

hehe its amazing what you brain interprets as a power gain... its mostly just that more powerful sound, that makes you percieve a profound performance gain... I mean it does pick up a little, but you know what I mean

if you run pipes all the way out the back your fine, even off the header it is possible but it wont happen from driving it for a few days, i ran my truck off the headers for 10k miles and nothing happened and its been 20k miles since i had the exhaust redone and still no problems
