Is there a way to tell if your car has been geared without taking the rearend apart?

try the gear calculator. It is somewhere in the stickies. You put in your tire size and then stock gear size. Then put 65 mph or whatever you coast on the highway at and it will tell you how many rpms you should be at. Then you can tell.

May get tricky to be exact though. 4.10 and 3.90 aren't that big of a difference. The same with other sizes.
