My tranny is slipping!?!?!!?

My tranny is slipping!?!?!!?
So I have about 40-50% power in 1st gear now (automatic). The car sounds fine, but when I give it moderate gas (1/3 throttle) it accelerates slowly and shifts hard into 2nd. It feels like someone kicked the rear end right when it shifts. At 1/2-3/4 throttle the car seems to bog in 1st and shifts HARD into 2nd. At WOT the car will not even come close to breaking lose (will break loose in any conditions at WOT in normal operation) and the car shifts so Fvking hard the tires chirp. It shakes the car. The thing is, it doesn't do it when the tranny/car is cool.... at least not yet. It started yesterday. I feel I am losing 1st gear. Is this normal? The car is just shy of 98k. How much $$$ am I looking at? I'm poor. Very very poor, and quite upset. Anyone know what's going on here?
Thanks in advance!

First thing I would do is check the fluid levels.
But...sure sounds like it's no good... For a NEW automatic + installation, you will be looking at over 2k. Unfortunately, automatics are very expensive..

Ya dude. Trans is going. Maybe you could call Aamco and they could do something to it??? It'd take it there and see if they can't fix something in it.
It's normal though dude, your car is probl. 10 years old...transmissions weren't meant to go for ever...
Probably 2k+ for a rebuilt AOD + install.

car is a 97, so yea almost 10 years old. Fluid level is fine. The fluid is a bit dark, but still translucent. It isn't black or anything. I don't know when it was last flushed.

RE: My tranny is slipping!?!?!!?
I thought it was an AOD-E, and then the later models went to 4R70W (I think that's the code)...
Could be that the bands are really worn.. Do the revs increase before the shift?? Do they fluctuate at all??
You may be better off going to Ebay, and bidding on one of the nicely built trannies for $1200.. Just throw it in yourself.. It's not that hard, more so time consuming... Plus, you'll have a warranty, and a tranny that can handle a bunch more power than your current trans-configuration..

Hmm... I don't know what to tell you.. You could try something as simple as a tranny flush, see if it helps a little, maybe extend the window of use a little...

might be a vacuum modulator, thats what regulates vacuum might have a leak, causing it to shift hard, i used to have a 97 taurus SHO which had a 3.8 too, just putting it out there.
