Default Gears

Is there a way to tell whether you have 3.27, 3.73, etc just by looking at the gears? I have a 97GT and would like to mod up to 3.73. The specs on the door says 2.73, but when I bought the car there was a slight leak from the differiential which tells me someone could have been in there before I got the car. I'd hate to buy 3.73 and that's whats already in there.

Go to the track, tell us what you run and then we'll tell you if you have stock gearing

Actually, I think there is by the number of teeth, but I think someone on here should be able to tell you!

jack up the rear end so both wheels are off the ground and put it on jackstands, then put a white mark on the inside of 1 wheel where you can see it from underneath the car. put the tranny in neutral and release the parking brake. get under the car where you can turn the driveshaft by hand and see the mark you made on the wheel. make a mark on the driveshaft where it's easy to see. turn the driveshaft clockwise looking at the rear end from the front side by hand and count the number of revolutions it makes in order for the wheel to make just 1 full revolution. if it takes just less than 3 revs, you still have the 2.73 gears, if it take about 3-1/2 revs, you have 3.55 gears, and if it takes about 3-3/4 revs, then you have 3.73 gears.

thats a pretty good idea you just presented there, never would have thought to do that

Thanks roundman for the 101 lessons in gears. Looks like I still have the stock 2.73's. I hear scrubbing sounds when making slow left or right turns so this is all the more reason to bite the bullet and get 3.73's or 3.90's installed soon. Anybody in the Metro Atlanta area know where I can go to get them done inexpensively? I plan to order the motive gears from Mustangtuning.com. Oh and 2000Silver, I'm not sure if it is this forum or Stan*net.com's forum, but someone posted a chart of the axle codes on the door panel sticker on all mustang. Do a search on gears on both forums and you should come up with it. Just to list a few of the common ones are..
axle code:
A7 ------------------ 3.07

E, 5, 34 ---------------- 3.27

M, 8, ------------------ 2.73

Y, Z, ------------------- 3.08

thanks for the compliments guys but the idea in not original to me, I read about this method of checking gear ratios many, many years ago in HOT ROD and it still works. some things just don't change.

That would have been me...<grin> Complete list for newer Mustangs, not exhaustive list of all Mustangs. That would be one heck of a list!!!

Axle Code E Differential Type Conventional Gear Ratio 3.27

Axle Code E Differential Type Traction-Lok Gear Ratio 3.27

Axle Code M Differential Type Traction-Lok Gear Ratio 2.73

Axle Code Y Differential Type Conventional Gear Ratio 3.08
