MPG/Performance Help!!!

RE: MPG/Performance Help!!!
UT,
Not to change the subject but how do you like your 3.90 gears? Been racking my brains trying to decide on 3.73, 3.90 or even 4.10 if I dare. I am not worried about gas mileage as I drive mostly highway in 5th so I will see a small drop but not much. Did you have stock gears before? If so, did you notice a big difference?

RE: MPG/Performance Help!!!
unfortunatly there just isn't any mods you can really buy that are going to signficantly help MPG.
The underdrive pulleys MIGHT give you a small amount (no way its even close to 1 MPG).
The number one thing you can do is drive it super easy and don't go over the speed limit. On my DD going from 70 to 80 MPH is a 2-3 MPG difference.

RE: MPG/Performance Help!!!
I would like to go with the MAC CAI, Accufab 75mm TB/Plenum and a Superchips Comp because I can get the whole setup from a friend for $400.00 installed. These are extra parts he has laying around and is willing to sell to me cheap. My friend says with these three mods I will get a 3-5 mpg improvement. Is he right or should I spend the money on something else??? Also is there a big differance between MAC and K&N or BBK?? Like I said above the MAC comes with the package deal.
Thanks Again Guys: Fantor

RE: MPG/Performance Help!!!
There is no combonation of performance parts that are going to get you 3-5 MPG.
Going thru all the boltons, to cams, to the blower, the only thing that acutaly added MPG was the blower, and that was highway only (massive decrease in town).
You might pick up 1-2 MPG if your lucky, but there just isn't that much more to be had. If there was, you would be seeing OEM's doing this.,
400 installed for that setup is a deal though. Dunno about the superchips tune but it probably won't hurt.

RE: MPG/Performance Help!!!
I gained over 3mpg with an Edelbrock Performer RPM catback (don't make 'em anymore, unfortunately...just look for a flow through muffler design instead of the crappy baffles), March Ram Air, Tunable Induction MAF-TB pipe, and Amsoil 2-stage air filter. From the factory I was averaging about 21mpg. Now, I'm disappointed with 24mpg.

RE: MPG/Performance Help!!!
Fantor, the two biggest factors in your poor fuel economy are lots of city driving and the auto tranny. Autos come from the factory less efficient than 5-speeds. This last summer I traded in a 5-speed 98 GT for an 03 auto GT. The auto got such poor mpg (and was so boring!) that a month later I took it back to the dealer and got a 5-speed 03 GT. The auto averaged about 19, and I do a lot of highway miles. The stick shift 03 gets 22-24 mpg.
That said, some performance parts will increase your economy. My 98 only had a MAC CAI, 75mm Accufab TB, and a C&L plenum, and it went from an average of 22-24 to 25-28 mpg. One five hour freeway trip got me an average of 32 mpg. However, my 03 has the mods in my sig, and only gained about 1 mpg total over stock. Driving only on the freeway (road trip) at 70-80mph nets me 26 mpg.
If your friend can truly get you those parts for $400 including install, I would get them. That is a hell of a deal, the Accufab combo alone should cost $400. They will add some power, and you may see better fuel economy. I do think that because you do so much city driving that you will not see better fuel economy, even with the parts. A computer chip will probably require you to use premium gas, which will end up costing you even more money in fuel, especially if prices skyrocket again. If you have the money, pick up a cheap used fuel efficient car to use as a daily driver, and save the Mustang for the weekend.
In the end, Mustangs really are best suited to the open road !
Good Luck!

It seems like asking alot for those mods to make 3 MPG.
