I'd say, you are very lucky to have found someone that will do it for that cheap cause most shops would charge a few thousand for it in parts and labor at least. The heavy labor is what usually jacks up the price so the part cost factors in very little. It's all that work they are having to do. In switching with someone else you are saving on parts, but that's it. That's all providing you can find someone wanting to switch and pay out some major $.
Actually the person I'm swapping with is a mechanic and is swapping out his transmission himself. Or should I say, WAS swapping it out himself. After talking with him on the phone today, if I help him swap his trans then he will help swap mine so it is actually costing me $0 to do the swap. I'm not saying everyone will get that lucky but if you find someone who wants to swap and a shop who will charge a reasonable price (most shops I called around here charged $50/hr with estimated time of 15-16 hrs.) you can get it done for less than $1500. Whatever route you decide to take is up to you, just giving my opinion.
