Coil Over Plug - looking for mods
I apologize in advance, I'm sure this has been covered many times. I'm new to this "COP" thing. I accidently posted this in the 6-Cyl forum - so I'm already off to a bad start.
I want to both detail the engine and optimize ignition performance at the same time. This has to be one of the ugliest ignition wiring solutions ever devised. The wiring harness on my 1972 750 Bonnie Triumph was immaculate by comparison.
Is there a wire kit? There has to be more attractive wires than the wrapped in electrical tape look. I have seen tricked out Coils: colors, that sort of thing. Are there more efficient plugs - or are the OEM platinum plugs the best thing going? The engine is not modified yet, but I’m laying the foundation.
I plan to put on a blower, headers, x-pipes w/cats (I'm in CA), cold-air, and a complete Ford Racing engine kit, but first I want to start by detailing what isn't going to necessarily going to be replaced, or should otherwise be upgraded before the engine is blown: ignition, brakes, suspension and so forth.
Finally, where can I a good how-to on replacing the plugs: there’s a lot of stuff that obviously has to be moved out of the way just to extract them.

There are aftermarket coils out there, but its not nessicary for performace as the stockers are very good to start with, and they don't really look any better IMO.
The plugs are easy, just unscrew the coil hold down bolt, pull it off the plug, and then replace the plug

What's a good guide - there's bars in the way, not yet sure what their purpose is exactly, not covered in Hemming's engine view - no illustration... Can't extract the coils unless the bars are removed.

Theres a sticky on how to change spark plugs. The only thing you have to take off is the air intake tube. There was about 2/3 plugs that are a little tricky to get to, but it really isn't bad at all. I've changed plugs on other cars that were much worse. Just have an assortment of extensions on hand and it'll be cake. The job for me-and I am no mechanic whatsoever, took about an hour and a half, give or take. It didn't even feel like it was that long. Not hard work at all.

Well you don't really have any plug wires. You have electrical harnesses that plug into each COP and the fuel injectors. The "bars" you reference are the fuel rails. You don't have to take them off to take the COP or plugs out. Of course it's easier with everything out the way for sure. As for COP performance, they do sell COP packs upgrades. You can read more about them here at American Muscle.
