my suggestion was just what he should do to the exhaust and what he should do first. first do the heads back then go into the engine.

I dunno shakin kinda sounded like ya meant one cam for the engine......why would jd say how many cams he needed per side???? ( had to take up for my none DOHC brother )
you did say "cam" steed, JD said "cams". Therefore, JD was right...if you try to order a cam for a sohc 4.6...that's what you will get, ONE cam. only enough for one side.

The way you put it, it sounds like we are talking about a single cam pushrod engine.

You're still OK in my books though. [sm=icon_cheers.gif]

Hello, I am looking for a little advice. I have a 1998 Mustang GT 4.6L that is totally stock. I would like to up the rwhp to around 300 without going into the engine (if possible). I am hoping I get to 300 with a new exhaust system, cold air intake, and performance chip. Is this possible?

Can anyone give me any guidence on chips (or programmers) I am looking for something off the shelf, dont want to pay for dyno time at the moment.

Also any advice on exhaust systems would be appreciated, I am going to avoid changing the headers, but from there back is fair game.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
ok buddy, no one here has been too terribly much help. i know you still have 12345546 bazzilion questions. i have a 1998 GT. i have 300 rwhp. if you want details on my setup, how much i spent, what it takes etc... pm me and i'll spill the beans for you in detail.

I personally knew what shakin was getting at with his post. jd, it'd be SOHC not SOHCs. Single overhead cam as in one camshaft per bank. But yes you'd need two cams.

Could he swap a DOHC from a 99 or so NA Cobra and then do camS? I think that'd net him more than SOHC heads swap.

Thanks 2000si, that is exactly what I meant

Well, to be exact, they are sold in matched pairs, so that is refered to as a cam.

It's all good, no ill will JD.

OK... To sum it all up you will be spending a good bit of money to get a 98 4.6 GT up to 300 hp.

You need to first off do the PI head swap and PI intake manifold swap. That will put you even or a little over the 99+ GT's.

Then do the exhaust... Long tubes, good X mid pipe, and straight through catback such as Magnaflows. Get some underdrives, adjust timing to 16 degrees advanced, good cold air intake such as Densecharger, then grab a set of stage 1 cams and you will be at or a little over 300 hp. After cams are installed I would get a good dyno tune.

Like I said before, I have just about all the bolt on's I can get and I dyno'd at 276 rwhp and 325 rwtq. All it would take me is a set of cams and I will probably be running about 315 hp im guessing.

Let us know what you do.

no one answered my question... cause I'd like to know myself. Could he swap the set of DOHC heads from a Cobra or Mach I onto his 98, and wouldn't that net him even more power over the stock 99+ SOHC GT heads?

That would in the end cost more than what I said do. There is a lot of things that have to be chhanged to make it a DOHC. That would get REALLY expensive and not really worth the upgrade.
