Both filters paper and K&N will get about as dirty with use. The K&N CAN be cleaned where the paper one has to be replaced. You do the math

The snorkel thing is a no brainer for me. I took it off and tossed it

True *****, true, however some say the K&N filters TOO well and thus lets dirty into the intake? But then again some have had K&Ns in their car for years and years and had no problems, so maybe it's just an old wives tale.

K&N in all of my cars and have never had a problem. Don't waist your money on a CAI, it's a whopping 4-5 HP for like 100$. Save up your money and get gears or something like I wish I had done.

I ran my 88 LX 5.00 for 189000 miles before I sold it. It had the same K&N filter that I bought a week after I got the car.
The kid who bought it took the engine out and apart for some mods. He was in awe at how good it looked.
Part of the longevity was no doubt the synthetic oil that I used for a great part of the ownership...

ORIGINAL: CoolAid

Before the CAI, I went one step further and took my air compressor + cutting tool and cut off 90% of the stock air cleaner shell. Pretty much made it a CAI myself. Had to get the FIPK kit for the C.A.R.B. emmisions sitcker tho, or I would'a kept it the way I had it. [:@]

EDIT: (Meaning it wouldn't pass California's "Visual" inspection)

mine passed just fine with the K&N and no silencer....just gotta go to the right mechanic....they also passed me even though i had my stock muffler turned-down under the car....i bought my filter used off a guy on here...i also bought his bullitt fuel door..gave him 50 bucks for both....best deal of my life even though the door was kinda rusted....just buy a used one....they are reusable anyway so you can wash it off and re-oil it....i'd say definitely worth the sound and smidgen of throttle response....CAI aren't worth it if you plan to SC later....which is why i went with just the filter....just in case....................
