Default WINTER MOD: 10" CONVETER/BIG RESULTS-DR's ALSO

Well after doing the basic mods and not getting great results I have deceided to get a 10" converter and a set of DR's. Really need help with the DR's also as I read different things. What I have gathered is the M/T's are the best for the track but they are NOT streetable. BFG's are very good, streetable but will only last 5000 miles, maybe less and not good in rain and finally that NITTO's are the most road worthy DR's lasting as much as 12K miles but need to be heated to get them to stick well. Sorry I got off track but the DR's are an important part of this mod. I can expect possibly as much as a drop in et's of .75, maybe more!
TCI did a test of their not too good 10" and got a .4 quicker time, on the dyno went from a before of 254.6 WHP/284.1 WTQ and after 267.0 WHP/312.9 WTQ! These increases were attributed to the TCI 10" weighing 24#'s less than the stock 11" converter. At 3500 rpm's it made 266.5lbs/ft and with the 10" it made 312.9, an additional 46.4lbs/ft. Even at 4200 rpm's they saw over 20lbs/ft of additional lbs/ft of torque.
I am getting a much better converter than the TCI as it will withstand the torque being produced in 2nd gear and being LOCKED right after the 1-2 shift!
It will weigh 21lbs. less than the stock 11" and stall will be in the 3600-3800rpm range. These should be my best mods yet! mark

Might I suggest somethingcheaper?

Edge Racing is awesome, there's a few fox body guys running these stalls (including myself) and no complaints what so ever, just pure performance. Call there and talk to Andre, the guy is a genious when it comes to building a custom stall.

Custom built. Price is good as I checked locally. send me an email at marksweet@webtv.net and I will give you the complete info. Not many converters can take locking up in 2nd gear and that includes EDGE and companies like TCI. I have spoken to the gentleman at EDGE and have seen the inside of one of their converters. I am glad for the guys who are having fgood luck with their edge. 3000 stall is a bit short considering stock is nearly 2800 rpm's. I will have 1000rpm's more and it will not be a pain to drive on the street that way, in fact it wiill start to roll with the brake realeased. Please no flames, just facts and experiences. I did a lot of research on this and could have had a stock 11" reworked for 3500stall but it would not have been efficient nor last very long with what I am doing. mark

2800 rpm stall is not factory in theAOD. I can hardly imagine it being factory in the stock 4670w either, but I haven't really researched that tranny, that's agood amount of stall for a car to come out of the factory with. My car rolls with the brake released also. What don't you like about the internals of the Edge Converters?

Application..............minimum stall speed....max stall speed

'98-up Mustang GT...2324...2737
'98-up Crown Vic....2024...2440
'99-up Police or handling package Crown Vic...2319...2750
'99-up 4.6L F150...2145...2505
'03 Marauder...2555...3011

The Marauder converter is the same as the '98 and up GT except that it has brazed fins and the GT does not. Mark
PS: THIS info is from Ford with the input torque in the 295lbs/ft. range. Also I am NOT an expert by far on converters but am using guys who specialize in the Ford 302's and 4.6 motors and AOD/4R70W trannies. As for the EDGE converters I can only show you a pic of the inside of a used converter. I am glad you like yours. Try getting your tuner to have it lock the converter right after the 1-2 shift at WOT. This lowers et but is harder on the converter.
[QUOTE=dirtyd0g]Here is a look at Edge racing's converter using the stock 245mm clutch. Whatever makes a sellable product I guess.

They've got a few different levels of converters, which one is that the inside of? Mild Street Edge? Street Edge? The AOD is electronically controlled which=no tuner. My converter locks when I shift into 3rd gear.

i have a set of mickey thompsons on some v-6 15" rims so i don't have to use them for dd duty. you should go at least 3.5k stall, 4k if you can.

Sorry you do not have the lock up converter. However should you ever need a tranny/converter work/replacement BC-Automotive.com is the place to look into. I get my info from www.tccoa.com aka
Thunderbird & cougar Club of America.
Since most t-birds are auto's these guys need to have strong trannies and converters. I do not know what model EDGE that is but if yours is working fine for you I am glad.
I am getting a 10" with stall of 3800 rpm's from Alan aka dirtydOg at TCCOA. He supplies converters to Darrin aka BC-Automotive. Darrin makes some of the finest/toughest trannies for Fords with 4R70W's and possibly the AOD. Alan supplies the converters to BC. Check out the site and register. Go to the drivetrain forum and check out a thread about "the inside of a Marauder converter". You will learn a lot about converters and what is good and bad. Many pics make Alan's descriptions simple to understand. In the Jan. issue of MM&FF these guys helped change a 600WHP Stang change from a stick to an automatic because the owner was not enjoying the stick on the street with this low 11 sec. car! I believe since the article the car has gone into the 10's.
The key to Alan's converters is that the 10" and 9.5" have the capability to withstand being locked right after the 1-2 shift at WOT! That drops the et even more plus the stall! The 10" is also 21lbs. lighter than the stock 11.25" from what I have gathered. Stock is 56lbs. according to the mag article and Alan said his 10" weighed 35lbs.
Start with registering at www.tccoa.com and check out the drivetrain forum and that thread on the Marauder converter.
Thanks guys, Mark
