Default Pi swap VS Porting stock heads

Can you get 99+ power from porting stock heads on a 96-98 GT and use 99+ cams and still get enough flow to get around 225-235hp at the wheels? If so, which is more cost effective? I'm still researching Mustangs before it's time to buy one. I have one month left before I'm done paying on my Civic.

you can do it, as non pi heads can flow well when ported. with some bolt ons, porting and cams 235 rwhp is easily attained. but there are some pros and cons.

PROS:

less cost due to not having to buy new heads.

CONS:
lack of compression increase you get with PI heads.
your car will be down during the whole process due to having to remove the heads. this can easily turn into 1-2 months.
non pi heads do not accept some of the better aftermarket cams for 4.6's.
you will still have the very restrictive non pi intake.

your best bet is to buy a set of PI heads, have any work you want done to them, and then bolt them on. bolting bone stock PI heads alone will give you that power, with porting and cams you can get much more. I'm making over 300 rwhp, and have several things still to do to increase my 2V N/A's rwhp.

SPEND THE MONEY!! TAKE YOUR TIME, BE PATIENT!! IT'S WORTH IT!!
took me almost 2 months from the time i handed the ehads over till the time i drove away, because of all the work i wanted done and the large amount of business a good shop will have. but i've got a killer setup, i get alot of compliments and interest, and it's overall just awesome. do it!!

its cheaper to buy a set of PI heads and intake then to have your stock heads ported by a descent porter.

That's cool bro. I actually plan on buying another set of non-PI heads so my car won't be down too long if I decide to go the 4.6 route. Ebay sells them for dirt cheap. From what I understand from some of your posts, the PI heads and intake isn't a simple bolt on job, the Mustang will be my only car for school and work, I don't need to be down long at all. My goal is around 235-240rwhp N/A when it's all over, I'm not going for that much, just some good power to get me around. I'm glad to find out that it is possible to do though.

Yeah you'd be much happier with PI heads and intake. For starters you can get a PI intake with the aluminum crossover which won't crack like the plastic one, and also the PI intakes have longer intake runners so you get more torque. Also with the non-PI heads, as mentioned above, they won't accomodate high lift cams like you can put on PI heads, and even ported, your top end will still be limited, since that is a major weakness with non-PI heads.

remember that when you swap the heads, you'll have to replace all your gaskets and bolts, so adding on PI heads doesnt take much more. it's a very direct swap. if you just port non pi heads, and put them back together with the stock cams and intake, you won't make 235 rwhp without a buttload of bolt ons and a good tune. you need to add cams, or use pi heads.

If your gonna buy new heads and get them ported, buy PI heads and port them! That will give you some awsome power.
(and they will out flow ported npi heads)

But if you're set on npi heads I have some in the garage.
