Besides the cams themselves, I know I need new springs, but what about new retainers?
Also, will I have to bring the valve cover and head gaskets if the place that installs them pulls the heads? Which is more common, pulling the heads, or keeping them on there?

While you have it apart I would go ahead and replace everything. Springs, retainers, etc. to me thats just insurance that everything will run right together. On some engines (I couldnt tell you what years) the cams came with pressed on gears. If thats the case with yours, you will need to buy gears that bolt on for the new cams. I dont think its necessary to pull the heads for a cam install on the mod. motors sinceyou can get to the cams by just taking off the valve covers.
The shop should have all the needed gaskets or be able to get them, but you can always buy them ahead of time and have one less thing to pay the shop for.

How do I know if I have pressed on cam gears or not?
Sorry to bring a dead thread back to life, but I'm still trying to figure this question out. Is there a way to tell without having the car apart?
