probable cause of your backfire was the alternator was slowly dieing. it probably kept the battery charged enough to turn your engine over but barely enough to do that and get enough juice to your coils to light the fuel. if it is working fine now, chances are you will be ok

I'd say since you can charge your battery and the car runs fine, it's prob the alternator. It's easy to remove & test it.
