Well, I just got off of the phone with a local muffler shop, he said if i get caught without cats, i will be charged $10,000 for EACH cat.....I live in Illinois, where we DON'T have emission or smog or w/e it is checking but i've heard of police laying on the ground to see if your exhaust is legal or not....i really don't know what to do about this. I'm no friend of any cops so i can't really ask them, does anybody know what the deal is with this? I was thinking about taking my old cats off my old pipe and cutting them off wrapping them around the new pipe and weld them on so it looks like i have cats....probably stupid and won't work but i just don' tknow what to do please help..

get a mid pipe with cats...cleaner, less risk that u get pulled overand/or fined...and sounds better...

They won't charge you 10k per cat because that is an absurd amount for it. At the most they should charge you 100 for the whole car. What they may mean by that is that if they are caught taking legal smog equipment off of a car they can get fined 10k. Its the same out here in AZ but I found a place that would do it for me.

I don't have them on, and i live in AL and they don't have emissions or inspections. Don't worry about it, no cop is gonna really pull you over for a loud exhaust, usually there will be another reason they would pull you over. I am not saying gun it right next to one, but if your just cruising, i wouldn't worry about it. That whole $10,000 fine thing i believe what the shop could be charged with if they are found doing it. If you do get a ticket, it wouldn't be nothing more then a fix it ticket.

I dunno about that. I got off the phone with my local shop and the guy I was talking to said he got a flat $300 fine for messing with his cats (off road h pipe) . And he had to replace the cats and pass inspection. My advice? If you must do it, call your local law enforcement agencies so you at least know the possible consequences.

Yeah, i send my cousin a text asking about it, her boyfriend is a cop i totally forgot about that.. Hopefully I will get some help from that sometime tonight.. We have ONE state cop here in town that is a DICK, he pulled my friend over about a month ago, got him with 5 or 6 tickets (first reason to get pulled over being his tented windows) then his total was $1200, buy a new exhaust basically because he had an o/r y i think (96 silverado i think?) but yeah i don't want that to happen, i've only heard of that ONE and only cop actually laying down to see what's on and whats not on your exhaust.

Why is a cop a dick for enforcing laws? I don't get it?

Anyway...in MA you can get fined over $1k per missing cat.
