What about drivetrain noises?? Are you sure it's coming from the front of the engine??
What about idler pullies, or the serpentine tensioner??
They're a lot cheaper to check than just swapping out engines..
i have had 3 fords everyone of them problems with tensioner pulley, and idler pulley definetley check those
timing chain makes noise after alot of miles to when the tensioners where down... i believe there made out of nylon (meant to wear down so ford can make money)
i hit my rev limiter a few times now i have a bad ticking

RE: LOST AND FRUSTRATED
I used to have an Escort about 8 years ago, that right before the tensioner broke, was making a loud knocking, so I know all about what you're saying..
As for the sliders having the Nylon, that's so the chains don't make metal to metal contact.. The nylon is supple in comparison, and won't destroy the chain like some real metal-on-metal action...
The other things to check, would be your water pump, and your other accessories.. Those should be easy to check, since all you have to do is see if the pullies wiggle, when there's no belt tension.. If it wiggles, then the bearings could be bad..
