Default The worst place to leak oil...

So, when I got my new block, the rear plate was in a box but missing the rear main seal. I go to my friendly neighborhood Ford dealer and pick up a new seal. Not quite sure how it goes on, I took off the plate from my origional motor still sitting around and pound in the new seal according to the way the other one is. I run some RTV black over the whole plate and slap it on. Now I have a pretty good oil leak between the engine and the transmission. The worst place to leak oil. Now I have to pully the trany, but to do that I have to pull the L/T's and to do that I have to drop the k-member. grrr.... Anyway, does anyone have any tips to not get massive oil leaks at the rear main seal? Did I miss a stupid trick? I'm going to pull all this crap off today and see where exactly it's coming from.
