Swapped T-45's in the 97 Cobra today. PICS!!!
And to all who wonder, "Is the t-45 in a GT the same as a t-45 in a cobra?" Read on...
I bought a t-45 from a local mustang guy as he had a couple for sale and I took the one we thought was a t-45 out of cobra, well it wasn't. So after spending FOREVER getting the tranny out I was VERY dissapointed when they weren't identical. Upon some further investigation the bell housing is identical, and the mid section of the tranny is identical, however the tail section is different. We took the tail section off of the 4V t-45 and swapped it to the GT t-45and put the GT t-45 in the cobra and is running great. There is some linkage that needs to be removed to get the tail section off, but that wasn't a problem.
So yes, a 4v t-45 will work in a 2v t-45 and vice versa. Not a project I'd want to undertake on jack stands in my garage...fyi...

Here is what a 2V t-45 looks like.
When the shifterplateis removed it looks like this...
1. The part circled in red represents "when you shift, this is on the opposite end of your hand."
2. The part circled in yellow is a pin that I have NO idea how he got it out, but he did it, twice, and quickly." But this pin is DIRECTLY correlated to when you shift, and the transmission changing gears. It connects baby. If this pin was absent, your trans would shift.
Edit: Usually this pin would be pushed fully in...
This is what the tail unit looks like without the linkage.
Note: the linkage should be turned left to compliment the direction of the trans
Note II: there is a ball circled in GREEN that must stay there. (kind of like a ball bearing.)
Then we removed the bolts in purple and replaced the tail end with the 4v tailend while sealing the threshold with sylicone sealer.
Edit: Assume the shifterplate and the linkage are absent.

just a question, but did you swap the speedo gear from the old transmission to the gt tranny? if not, your speedo is going to be off.

Why are they different? Same gear in the rear I think...

I thought you posted about this before and the tailhousing was discussed? I ran into the same problem trying to do a swap.
Strange thing is, I don't remeber the bolts being there on the tailhousing... we could not get the cobra tailhousing off. If I remeber right it was all integrated or pinned or something (been a long time).
Shoulda got a TKO I went thru 2 45s before I finnally gave up on them

Fortunately with litlle effort the tail's are interchangeable. On my 4v the tail supports were about 3" behind these.
I'm assumingthis is a2v tranny anyway. What other car did they use the t-45 on???
Edit: no expensive parts for the 10 year old worn out cobra.

ok, then yea you have a different speedometer drive gear. The GT t45 comes with an 8 tooth and the Cobra one comes with a 7 tooth.
