Default Will welded on flow 40 series mufflers on stock exhaust cause restrictive pipe flow?

Just got flow 40 series mufflers welded onto stock exhaust, but it seems like the stock exhaust has restrictive pipe flow. It sounds alright, but something is missing. Is it that I need true catback? Do I need aftermarket midpipe? Both? Any input would be appreciative. I brought this subject up several times and I'm new to this exhaust stuff. Wondering what to do...

You don't need a full catback. The HP gains from a catback aren't all that noticable on a 2v 4.6 I had weld ins for along time and never felt a difference after I had my catback made (custom job).

Do you think the midpipe is really all I need then?

Yeah, I reccomend an off road if you can swing it (emissions???). If not all the companies have the high flow catted pipes.

I've heard the h or x pipe pipe will make it londer with a deeper sound. Does it inprove the exhaust flow within all the piping to mufflers?

Well, yes because the air doesn't have any cats to flow through. The only thing is, the mid-pipes are generally 2.5" in diameter and the stock catback is 2.25" so your bottlenecking the exhaust flow a little but it is not enough to make a difference if you're mostly stock anyway. They are louder and deeper, if you likea DEEPer exhaust tone go with an H pipe. If you like it a little more throaty and raspy go with the X pipe. I love the X pipe's with 40 series flows. Thats what I have always had. On my 94 GT and my 04 GT.

I'll probably have to go with a catted midpipe due to strict emission laws down here in Louisiana. I've been looking at some Mac and Bassani brands, but they're like double the price versus the off road pipes.

I have Flowmaster 40's welded in with a Mac O/R H-pipe and it sounds incredible! It's very deep and throaty sounding. I love it! You can't go wrong with an O/R h-pipe and Flowmasters. Like you before I got the O/R H installed I felt that it was missing something. It sounded good, but it wasn't where I wanted it to be. It sounds so much meaner and "beasty" lol, with the O/R pipe.

cat-back is just a sound mod for the most part, worth-while gains would only come if you are fi. the mid-pipe is where you can get some ponies, o/r is much louder that catted.

ideally you would have long-tube headers and an o/r mid pipe.

I actually had my O/R x pipe before I got rid of the stock muffs and it sounded kinda good.
