Default Why taller tires?

Why is everyone running taller tires, i.e. 275, 285 instead of say 245's. Dont you think you may get a little more gear from lower profile tires?

those numbers...245, 275, 285 etc is the width of the tire in millimeters. The profile is the height of the tire and I never really see anyone with a Stang go over a 50 series.

275/45/17

275 = 275mm wide
45 = the height of the sidewall is 45% of the width of the tire
17 = size of the rim its for

yea, ah, no sh#t guys. Click this link and do a quick calculation and you will see what Im talking about as far as tire height is concerned. Plug in 245/45/17, then 285/45/17 and watch the tire height grow!

because 45 is 45% of the width. if the width goes up...... yeah, you get it now?

Thats why people go from 245/45's to 275/40's .... because the tire height will remain the same... and yea of course a 285/45 will be taller than a 245/45 ... because the 45 we're referring to for height is not a finate number... its a ratio to the width. A 285/45 and a 285/35 will be the same width, but the 285/45 will be taller. Re-read my previous post.

guys Im well aware of aspect ratio and tire sizing. Basically I misread a couple of posts. I thought some guys were looking to go from 255/45 or 245/45 to 285/45 or the like and I didnt know why they were looking for a taller tire but I misread the posts. My bad.

No problem...

That's why I went 275/35/18 in the back.

No need to send PM's explaining yourself and then throw a bad insult in there, Bobbo....
