Default Substance Under Oil Cap

i changed my oil and oil filter. when i was putting new oil in I noticed a yellow substance with the consistency of margarine accumulated on the inside of the oil cap.

what is that from?

2002 Mustang GT 23,600 mi.

Sounds like you might be getting water in your oil. Head gasket, intake manifold etc. Check coolant levels, if all is good, give a good cleaning along with an oil change and keep your eye on the cap.

sounds like condensation. do you make alot of short trips? expessialy when its cold outside?if so then thats ur prob

ya ive had the car 4 years and only put 23k+ miles on it, so ya alot of short trips

Could def. be the cause. Just clean it up, change the oil and keep an eye on it.

You need to take some longer trips so the engine has a chance to warm up and boil off this condensation.

How short is a short trip? I take a 5 mile route to school every morning, but my engine always ends up at normal operating temperature when I arrive. Is that ok?

Normal operating temp is just the coolant, not the engine itself. It depends on the type of trip, but 15 miles will generally get the engine hot enough. Five is likely short. When I actually lived close to work (<1 mile), I'd drive a 20 mile loop every other day on the way home.
