What type of diff do you have? Could it be that the wheel you were looking at was "slipping" while on the other side your whel was spinning on ice?

if your clutch is goin bad you will smell it. specially if its slipping. i think its your differential thats going bad. probly only spinning one wheel.

well today after the car thawed out a little and the streets cleared up a bit, I got the car up the street fine. I guess the transmision was just frozen soI couldnt get it in gear. As far as the rear end being broken, how can I check?
