Rear Main seal?

Rear Main seal?
I had my car in for an oil change the other day and while looking around under my car i noticed an oil leak from where the tranny meets the engine. the mechanic said it was my rear main seal. just wondering if anyone has had any experience in replacing one and if you had a shop do it how much did they charge you? I know you have to drop the tranny to get at it (really sucks). Im not getting any oil spots on the ground yet so i guess it just started leaking slightly. Thanks for any info. oh and while im having the seal fixed is there anything else i should do while im at it? thanks again.

RE: Rear Main seal?
I had this once..
Its a pain in the *** to change, Gotta drop the oil pan, I was lucky ,had a throwout bearing go and I changed that the seal, the clutch and pilot bearing all in one shot.Took a lil over half a day to do in a driveway. If you have a friend to help ya that is totally recommended.

I had all that stuff out and off the car when I did it.Its been about 6 years since I did it.If I can remember properly I'd say you have to drop the tranny.I had pulled all that out since I was doing the throw out bearing. But if im correct you DO have to remove the tranny. And that rear main seal needs to be lined up just right as well so as to not make any premature wear on it

You need to drop the exhaust, the trans, remove the clutch, then the flywheel and loosen the pan so the back of it drops a little, and that gets you to the rear seal plate to change the seal and then reverse the procedure, good luck.

All of the above except dropping the oil pan. You dont need to remove the whole plate just the seal. Go to auto zone and rent the seal puller and seal installer. Just pop out the old seal, lube the new seal with clean oil and pop it back in. The hardest part is taking the tranny down.
